Spanish film Wrinkles will open Cartoon Movie 2012

Cartoon Movie to open with showing of Wrinkles

Cartoon Movie's 14th annual event kicks of on March 7 in Lyon this year, with Spanish film Wrinkles – a poignant and thought-provoking animation that tackles the issue of Alzheimer's – the curtain raiser.

Based on Paco Roca's multi-award winning comic, Wrinkles has been brought to 2D animated life by Ignacio Ferreras. This moving tale centres on the friendship between two senior citizens who meet at a care home, exploring the sensitive and universal themes inherent in old age, and Alzheimer's, with a touching humour and tenderness.

Wrinkles was nominated for an Annie Award earlier in the year, as well as a prestigious Spanish Goya Award, and was produced by Spanish studios Perro Verde Films, Cromosoma, and Elephant in the Black Box.

Mature themes

There will be a number of other notable adult-themed animations at this year's Cartoon Movie event, including Young Perez – a French project in development with Explicit Films – which tells the tragic tale of a young boxing champion sent to Auschwitz during World War II

Another Day of Life is another project that is hotly anticipated for its combination of live action and animation, to tell the personal tale of journalist Ryszard Kapuscinski's account of the Angolan war and its infamous child soldiers.

In total there will be 55 animated features at various stages of development showcased at this year's Cartoon Movie, in addition to some 700 industry professionals looking to expand their pan-European distribution and augment their network of contacts.

Cartoon Movie's pitching forum will run from March 7-9, 2012, in Lyon, France.

Registration for Cartoon Movie is still open for participants and visitors who wish to attend.
