Applications for Facebook/Myspace

**Click on "Applications for Facebook/Myspace" to read full blog**

One of my little random jobs recently was to do some graphics for a website (which is still being built) but we made it into a facebook application too!

The application is now in both Facebook and Bebo, and we are currently working on MySpace.

But are people getting bored of applications, was it fun in the beginning and now are pokes just a pain?! We thought we'd do something different and actually make the pokes animated, so it's a bit more fun.

In my mind applications are just used by people who are avoiding work though! Games are all the rage, fun and popular; something to waste time. Are simple pokes boring? Even animated ones?

Lemony Snicket Credits

Best credit sequence ever in my opinion. Absolutely love it!

The lead animator is Todd Hemker, see his website here: www.yellowshed.com

Regina Spektor continued.....

eugh how I love that woman.

There's an animator that I speak to once in a while who is some sort of genius, he's done a video for one of Regina Spektor's songs "Somedays", and although it is an unofficial video I think it deserves MUCHOS kudos.

(the html for this blog doesn't seem to be working so I'll have to just give you the links instead. Sorry!)

Freelancers

Any freelancers out there, have a gander at the TV freelancers website here:

It's great to have a read of the legal side - like holiday pay rights, and that unpaid work experience is illegal!! Didn't know that, it seems I have a few companies to tell off...

"The search for the UK's most exciting young creative talent is over. After an overwhelming 700 applications from all corners of the UK, the 4Talent team, alongside an esteemed panel of judges have made their final decisions"

I was chuffed last month when I heard that I had won a 4Talent Award!! (and I was the only animator!)

Issue 8 of Ten4 Magazine is out now which has a profile page for each of the 20 winners. Check them out HERE! I'm truly in awe of their skills and feel humbled to have been put alongside them.

Preloader Film Festival

*please click "preloader film festival" to read the whole blog*

Preloader is a film festival in the South West of England and has been called "X-Factor for the filmmakers of the future". It showcases the work of young filmmakers and emerging talent in Swindon and Wiltshire. Not heard of it? Neither had the majority of people that I'd spoken to about it. It did, however have a great turn out and was a really interesting night.

Ranging in style from live action fiction and innovative documentaries through to music videos and stop frame and digital animation, the films had only one thing in common - they were all under 10 minutes long. I was lucky enough to have made it to the final of the Preloader competition with two of my animations and faced judging from the audience (of over 120 people) and four judges made up of broadcast professionals. The audience voted for their favourites based on concept, originality and production values.

Why does nobody want to pay for animation?!

*Click on "Why does nobody want to pay for animation?!" to read more!!*

The main place that I seem to get interest in work is through MySpace, although the majority is from bands asking me to make music videos for free or for about £100, which is crazy for the amount of work that goes into making an animation. It's not that I'm moaning about being asked, it's a compliment that musicians want to have my work seen alongside their songs, but it seems for the most part they don't appreciate the time and effort that goes into it. One of my "friends" has a fantastic blog about this subject... I'll quote part of it:

Katy's little adventures

*Please click on "Katy's little adventures" to read the whole blog!!*

Last Wednesday (24th October 2007) I was invited to the Innovation Centre at Central Saint Martins to talk at a seminar about web 2.0, and how the internet has helped me to promote myself.

I wasn't told much about the seminar before I went, and was expecting a load of young students eager to get into the animation industry but instead was faced with a load of mid-thirty to 50s business types wanting to know how better to promote their companies on the web (not necessarily associated with film or animation). I see myself as a bit of a beginner anyway, and I wasn't sure how much help I was. I stood up and said "hello I'm Katy Davis" and promptly went as red a really red thing and stayed like that for the duration of the talk. How embarrassing. It was fantastic when it ended though, as they kept on topping up my glass with free wine and a number of people approached me and thanked me for talking. So it wasn't a complete disaster....
